pcb overmolding
EI offers in-house premolding and overmolding with a wide variety of materials—a unique capability in the EMS industry that adds durability, protection, and integration without relying on third-party vendors.
materials we can overmold
EI offers premolding and overmolding of a wide variety of materials in house utilizing a 25 ton vertical injection molding machine. Overmolding protects circuit boards from environmental concerns while allowing full color customization and streamlining the outer appearance of the finished product. The overmold can incorporate company logos, approvals information and even graphics.

hear it from our customers
"A delightful company to work with. Could not have done it without your expertise."
"EI excels in responsiveness, support and flexibility. I very much appreciate EI’s ability to adapt on the fly."
"I appreciate the work EI does most of all because it makes my job easier."
"Overall, EI does a great job in dealing with everything we throw at them. They are responsive and understanding of us, even though it may not always be the most reasonable of requests. As a buyer, I feel lucky to have a supplier that works with us like they do."
"Working on a project that had a board that was simply not manufacturable the way it was set up, EI went above and beyond to help with engineering and still met a very short deadline."

Overmolding FAQs
Why use overmolding on electronic assemblies?
Overmolding can provide mechanical protection, strain relief, environmental protection, and a durable interface around electronic components, cables, or assemblies. Material and process selection should reflect the product's operating environment and mechanical requirements.
What materials are used for electronic overmolding?
Material selection depends on temperature exposure, chemical resistance, flexibility, adhesion, electrical properties, and environmental requirements. The selected material must also be compatible with the PCB, components, wires, connectors, and other materials in the assembly.
Can PCB assemblies be overmolded?
Yes. PCB assemblies can be overmolded when the design, component selection, masking requirements, pressure limits, thermal conditions, and material compatibility are considered during process development.
What is the difference between overmolding and potting electronics?
Overmolding generally uses a molding process to form a defined protective structure around an assembly or portion of an assembly. Potting typically fills a housing or cavity with a liquid compound that cures around the electronics. The appropriate method depends on environmental protection, mechanical requirements, geometry, rework needs, and production process.
